Saturday and Sunday saw some fine performances from a number of athletes in Athlone in Round 2 of the National Club League on Saturday and in the U20 and U23 National Indoors on Sunday. A heroic performance from the club’s athletes saw the club qualify yet again for the final of the National Club League to be held in the fantastic new indoor facility in Adamstown in Dublin next weekend. Laura Cunningham put in a strong performance to place 8th in the 200m in a time of 27.71 and followed this up with a leap of 9.96 in the triple jump. Rachel Finnegan placed 9th with a strong run in the 400m in a time of 67.13. Lorraine Delaney earned valuable points for the team with a 1.45m leap in the high jump to place 5th, as did Sarah Finnegan with a jump of 9.85 in the triple jump. Caoilin Milton made impressive debuts in the 400m and triple jump with a time 66.15 and a jump of 8.97.
Meanwhile on Sunday, several athletes from the club competed in the National U20 and U23s Championships in Athlone. Foremost amongst them, Sinead Treacy won double bronze in the U23 Women’s 200m and long jump, racing to a time of 26.23 in the 200m and leaping 4.75m in the long jump. Jerry Keary was also in strong form, clearing 1.90m in the U20 Men’s high jump to claim the bronze medal. In the 800s, Sinead Gaffney was unlucky to finish just outside the medals when taking 6th place in the final of the U23 Women’s 800m in a time of 2.24.26 while Ben Garrard raced strongly to record a double PB in the heats and final of the U20 Men’s 800m in times of 2.03.47 and 2.03.80.
