Well done to Camogie All-Star Laura Mitchell!!

Well done to Camogie All-Star Laura Mitchell!!

Congratulations to former club member Laura Mitchell who was recently named as the Camogie Young Player of the Year at the Camogie Association’s All Stars awards ceremony in Dublin.

This follows on from Laura’s player of the match role on the Galway minor team that captured the All-Ireland title this year.

Laura’s wider family are possibly the most represented family in Craughwell AC, with the Greaneys and Concannons featuring prominently in many age groups over the years.

Laura’s best performance for the club was probably in the All-Ireland cross country in 2005 where she was the club’s 2nd scorer on the U13 girls team that came 4th in the team event, with Laura placing 23rd in the race.  Craughwell’s team was led home that day by their 600m National track champion Ashley McDonnell in 16th place.

The team that day is a great illustration of the benefits of athletics for all sports with Noreen Murphy going on to captain the Galway U16 camogie team, Aoife Callanan part of the same Galway U16 squad, Linda Porter one of the leading U16 camogie players in the county and Sarah Helebert daughter of former hurling great Tom Helebert and current Clarinbridge manager.

Indeed when you look at other participants from Connacht, Sally Rose Maughan international athlete and daughter of legendary football manager John Maughan placed 2nd in the race and Dora Gorman captain of the Irish U17 Girls soccer team who brought such pride to the country this year placed 19th.
