The rain clouds parted to show good clear conditions for this year’s Streets of Galway 8km road race on Sunday morning, and a large attendance of Craughwell AC Athletes took part. 19-year old William Fitzgerald had an incredible run to finish 3rd overall and first Galwayman in the event.
This was a fine performance, just six seconds off the club record of 24:24 for the event set by the great Gerry Ryan in 2011. to give you an idea of the accelerating pace, above are William’s splits from his GPS watch during the race – a seriously impressive last 2km of well under 6 minutes and a final 3km of 8:50 – the man is on fire!
Anthony O’Boyle was 2nd Junior in 29:54 with Killian Walsh 3rd Junior in 31:06. Fergus Kelly ran a fine 29:43 to complete the top 4. Craughwell were 2nd team but this year there were no team prizes awarded due to the re-arranged format.
Sinead Gaffney had a super run to finish as 6th lady in 31:14.
Thanks as always to Craughwell’s own John O’Connor for the photographs. The full set of Craughwell finishers are listed below – well done to all!!
