Wrap-up of Craughwell AC Performances at Galway Senior Track & Field

The Galway Senior Track & Field was held in Dangan over the last 3 Thursdays with a nice mixture of involvement of athletes from senior athletics, fit4life groups and juvenile athletics.

On day 1, Johnny Lane continued his return to top form with a strong run to take 11th place in the men’s 5000m in a time of 17:44 with Tony Nevin 19th in 19:14.

Day 2 saw impressive performances from the Craughwell AC women’s squad, taking a clean sweep of the sprint and jumps events. Katie O’Donoghue led the way in the 200m, recording an excellent PB of 27.6. Sarah Finnegan took silver in 28.3 with Sineád Gaffney 3rd in 29.2. This followed a 5:46 for Sineád when taking 5th place in the senior 1500m. The high jump proved equally fruitful for the club with the top 4 places taken by Craughwell athletes. Cathriona Farrell took the Galway title with a 1.65m leap, followed by Maria McNamara with 1.50m, Katie O’Donoghue 3rd with 1.45m and Sarah Finnegan 4th also with 1.45m.

Diarmuid Quill took the Galway masters title with a jump of 1.50m.In the men’s 1500m, Finn Stoneman made his debut in senior athletics with an impressive 4:28 to take third place and narrowly missed out on a podium position in the 200m when finishing 4th in 26.5. Finally, in the senior women’s javelin, the club almost took another clean sweep with Maria McNamara taking the gold with 15.63m, Sarah Finnegan 3rd with 10.72m and Katie O’Donoghue 5th with 8.37m.

Day 3 saw yet another impressive performance from the women’s squad, again taking a clean sweep of the sprint and jumps events. In the 100m, Sarah Finnegan led the way with gold in a time of 13.2, with Rachel Finnegan 2nd in 13.6 and Melissa Mullins 3rd in 14.3. The 3 girls shared the spoils in the long jump also with Melissa in strong form to take the Galway title with a new PB of 4.78m, Rachel 2nd with 4.50m and Sarah 3rd with 4.46m. Final action from the club saw Finn Stoneman take 8th place in the senior 800m in a time of 2:18.

The above performances followed on from some good performances by Craughwell athletes on the Galway team in the Premier Division of the National Senior Track & Field. Cathriona Farrell took 1st place in the high jump with 1.65m, Sarah Finnegan placed 3rd in the 100m hurdles in a time of 17.82 and 3rd in the triple jump with 9.68m, and Linda Porter placed 3rd in the 1500m in a time of 5:18.32. These athletes along with more of the Craughwell squad now look forward to the second round of the National League in Athlone on July 17th.
