Young Guns Impress in Primary Schools Cross Country

The future looks bright for the next wave of athletes in Craughwell AC as runners from the club dominated the races at the annual Galway Primary Schools Cross Country championships in Renmore.  With early rainfall giving way to pleasant sunshine, Renmore was the place to be at noon on Tuesday, with 100s of primary school children preparing for their races. The races kicked off around 12.15pm with the 4th class girls 800m. There were some splendid performances from all around, with fine individual performances by many athletes and a very strong team performance by Craughwell NS with 4 runners in the top 18 promising to deliver a highly regarded team medal.

As the tension mounted in at the presentation ceremony afterwards, the Craughwell girls were delighted to be called out for team gold. The race itself had a powerful representation at the front from club athletes, including a fantastic 3rd place for Sinead Treacy (Carrabane NS). The boys 800m were off next, with an equally impressive performance from club members, with Craughwell NS snatching a near victory for the gold medals from club team-mates in Oranmore Boys School who finished in 2nd place. Club members took 2 of the top 3 places with Brian Concannon (Brackloon NS) running brilliantly to take the gold medal and Oisin Coppinger (Craughwell NS) with a super race to take 3rd position overall. Onto the 5th/6th class races which were held over 1000m and once again some fine performances here from members of the club. In the girls race, there was very stiff competition in the team event with Killeeneen NS taking the gold medal, Ballinasloe in 2nd place with a narrow margin of 2 points over Craughwell NS in 3rd place. The 5th/6th class boys 1000m was the final race of the day, where again the competition was intense. 5th class student Nicholas Sheehan (Oranmore Boys NS) had a fine run to take the individual silver medal and in the process reversing the result of the 4th class boys race to lead his school to team gold ahead of Craughwell NS in 2nd place. For Craughwell NS, it was another remarkable achievement to collect 4 sets of team medals, 1 in each race. This was a feat it achieved last year and to repeat it this year was outstanding.
